RADFORD WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT GAME BEHIND ERWIN SPENCER’S MILESTONE

BOX SCORE

BUIES CREEK, N.C Behind Da'Naria Erwin Spencer's game-high 24 points and 1,000-point milestone, Radford women's basketball won its fifth straight game with a 64-59 come-from-behind victory at Campbell Monday evening.

At the 8:03 mark, Ashley Buckhannon threw an outlet pass off a turnover to Erwin Spencer who converted the layup to net 1,000-points for her career.  She hit the milestone in style, converting a three-point play as she got fouled on the way up and drained the ensuing free throw. She joined Stephanie Howard, Patrinda Toney and Shannan Wilkey – the Top-3 scorers in Radford history - as the only four players to accomplish the feat during their junior year.

“I'm honored to be put in that category among all the great players that have played here at Radford,” commented Erwin Spencer.  “Hopefully we continue playing great and getting wins.”

The win stood as Radford's fifth straight and improved to 12-10 overall and 6-5 in the league.  Campbell dropped to 12-10 and 5-6 in the Big South.

Erwin Spencer finished with 24 points, her fourth consecutive game topping the 20-point plateau.  Buckhannon also hit the 20-point mark as she recorded 21, including a career-high six three-pointers.  It was the second time in the last three games the duo combined for 20 or more each in the same game.  Victoria Hamilton collected nine rebounds for the third time in the last four games.

Tonisha Baker and Jazmine Cooper led Campbell with 14 points apiece, while Amanda O'Neill recorded 11 to round out the double-figure scorers.

The Highlanders hit a season-high 10 three-pointers in the game.  Campbell converted 21-of-26 from the stripe compared to just 6-of-8 from Radford.

The Camels opened the second half on a 7-0 run to grab a 42-34 lead by the 17:40 mark.  Campbell led by as many as eight on two occasions in the second half, but Radford battled back.

Buckhannon hit her sixth trifecta at the 3:15 mark to give Radford its first lead, 55-54, since just over a minute left in the first half.

O'Neill's pair of free throws quickly gave Campbell the lead back, 56-55.  On the next possession, Hamilton's first made jumper of the game put Radford back on top, 57-56, with 2:42 remaining.

Following a free throw by Cooper that tied the game, Erwin Spencer then hit a 16-foot jumper with a hand in her face to put Radford back up two, 59-57 with just under a minute remaining in regulation.

Hamilton would knock down two huge free throws to give Radford a four-point cushion.  Kate Cloxton countered with two free throws of her own and then Erwin Spencer iced the game with a trey at the top of the key to give Radford the victory.

“Tonight was a test to see what we were really made of on the road,” said head coach Tajama Abraham Ngongba.  “We really showed some composure being down eight with nine minutes to go and we really finished strong.”

After not making a single three-pointer in the win at High Point, Radford went 8-of-14 from downtown in the opening period.  Buckhannon accounted for five of those and led all players with 15 points at the break.

Following an Erwin Spencer jump shot at 5:14 to even the score, 26-26, Campbell went on a short 6-0 run to take the lead, 32-26.  Radford would respond and regain the lead on an Ayana Avery trey, 34-33, but the Camels went into the break with a one-point lead, 35-34.

The Highlanders will return to the Dedmon Center for the first time since Jan. 23 when they take on Coastal Carolina in a 3 p.m. Saturday matchup on Feb. 11.
