RADFORD, Va. –
Josh Gardiner's single in the bottom of the 14th inning brought home the winning run, giving Radford a 2-1 win and a Big South series sweep of UNC Asheville on Sunday night.
The game, originally scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday, was pushed back to a 5:30 p.m. first pitch, and ended 3:21 later in extra innings at 8:51 p.m.
Gardiner's game-winner, his first hit of the game, came with one out and knocked in
Phil Bondi – Bondi had a leadoff single in the 14th.
Jeff Kemp went 3-for-6 at the plate to lead the Highlanders (14-10, 3-0 Big South), who won their fifth consecutive series and their 12th game in a row against UNC Asheville (12-13, 3-3).
The game was scoreless through 10 innings, before Asheville struck in the 11th. Casey Ebersole was at third base with two outs after a leadoff hit, but a throwing error at short allowed Ebserole to score and Asheville to claim a 1-0 lead.
The Highlanders answered in the home half when Kemp singled to lead off following the error, then scored on
Blake Sipe's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out.
Radford starting right-hander
Mark Peterson, who worked eight-plus innings, struck out a career-high 11 batters, allowing just five hits.
Abram Williams tossed three scoreless relief innings and struck out four to earn his first win (1-1).
Asheville right-hander Dean Roland went 10 innings, allowing six hits with seven strikeouts. Ethan Steible worked the final three frames and took the loss (0-1). Todd Joyner and Cody Buch had two hits each for Asheville.
Radford travels to East Tennessee State for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday night.
