MEN’S GOLF WRAPS UP C&F BANK INTERCOLLEGIATE IN FIFTH PLACE

RESULTS

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –
In the conclusion of the 35th annual C&F Bank Intercollegiate, the Radford men's golf team took home a fifth-place showing Tuesday afternoon and Weston Eklund wrapped up the three-day event in fifth as well.

Eklund shot a two-over 73 over the final 18 holes and held his fifth-place position from a day ago.   He wrapped up the event with a three-over 216.  This year, Eklund has concluded 54 holes of play with a 216 or better in five out of seven events.

Overall, Radford (289-297-296) combined to shoot an 882 and finished fifth amongst 29 teams.  Radford pushed its head-to-head season record to 84-43-1.

Starting the day in 28th, Michael Wade used three birdies compared to just one bogey to propel 20 positions up the leaderboard and join Eklund in the Top-10 with an eighth-place performance.  His two-under 69 tied for the lowest score of the day and was his fifth round in the 60's this year.  He also became the first Highlander to shoot sub-70 since the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in November.

“I am really pleased how we have progressed this spring and I can't say enough about how Weston and Mike step up each and every week with solid finishes,” said head coach Mike Grant

Callum Tarren and Wade Wawner each carded a final-round 77.  Tarren finished in a tie for 35th with a 223, while Wawner charted Radford's fourth score with a 229, earning a tie for 71st.

It was only the second time in 35 years the event was spread out over three rounds.  This year's tournament returned to the River Course at Kingsmill, site of the PGA Tour's Michelob Open from 1969-2002 and the Michelob ULTRA Open on the LPGA Tour from 2003-09.  This fall, professional golf will return to Williamsburg with the LPGA Kingsmill Championship, Sept. 3-9.

The Highlanders hit the links again on Apr. 9-10 for the Coca-Coca Invitational at Spartanburg Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.  It will be the last tune-up before the 2012 Big South Championship held once again at The Patriot Golf Club in Greenwood, S.C. on Apr. 16-18.
