GREENWOOD, S.C. – Radford men's golf carded a 294 on the second day of the 2012 Big South Championship Tuesday afternoon and is currently seventh heading into the event's final round.
The second day featured a double-tee on holes 1 and 10 and was held on a par-72, 7,120-yard layout at The Patriot Club at Grand Harbor.
In championship play, Radford's 294 stood as the third lowest second-round total since 1985 (first Big South Championship) and was the 13th total team round below 300.
Senior Michael Wade posted an 11-shot improvement from a day ago and finished the second round with a team-best 70 (-2). Sitting one-over through 13 holes, Wade got in the red due to birdies on three of the last 5 holes. He is 33rd (151) going into his final collegiate 18 holes.
Weston Eklund used four birdies against three bogeys to finish his day one-under 71. Starting on the 10th hole today and two-over through the first seven holes, Eklund birdied the par-5 18th and recorded three straight birdies (5-7) on the back nine to conclude his round in the red. He sits in a tie for 24th overall with a 147 and is eight strokes out of all-conference contention.
Capping his round at 75 (+3), Callum Tarren joined Eklund as the only two Highlanders to drop a birdie on three consecutive holes. Tarren's trio of red numbers came on holes 4, 5 and 6, which led to a tie for 26th (148) following 36 holes.
The Radford leader from a day ago, Tanner Carbaugh shot a six-over 78 and held the score with seven straight pars to close his round. With his two-day scorecard of 150, Carbaugh is one stroke ahead of his 36-hole career low and with a 75 or better tomorrow, the freshman will set a new 54-hole career low.
Ryan Rettberg had a much better day today, shooting a six-over 78. Despite some trouble over the front nine, Rettberg finished the day strong with two consecutive birdies on No. 8 and 9.
The 54-hole season-ending event concludes tomorrow. Rettberg will hit the tee box first for the Highlanders at 8:30 a.m.
