MEN’S TENNIS FALLS TO NO. 6 KENTUCKY IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Radford fell to No. 6 Kentucky, 4-0, in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament Friday afternoon at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. The Highlanders, who were making their school-record fifth postseason appearance in the last six years, conclude the season 20-6.
“The difference in this afternoon's match was a very good team against a great team,” commented Radford head coach Mike Anderson. “Though the match didn't go our way, I feel this program took another step in the right direction and we're already looking forward to next season.”
Despite the setback, the Highlanders' Thomas Dehaen was up a set against No. 80 Tom Jomby at the No. 4 singles position, while freshman Patrick O'Keefe was on the verge of forcing a third set on court six.
Kentucky's duo of Eric Quigley and Panav Jha, who entered ranked 7th in the country, held off Nicholas Sayer and Dehaen, 8-5, to secure the doubles team point. The Wildcats' other doubles victory came from Alejandro and Tom Jomby on court three, 8-3.
Igor Ogrizek and Stijn Meulemans were down a break (6-5) to No. 38 Anthony Rossi and Alex Musialek when the doubles competition was decided.
Quigley, the nation's No. 3 singles player, put his club up 2-0 with a straight-set decision over No. 120 Sayer, 6-3, 6-1 to improve to 48-6 on the season and 166-45 for his career.
Shortly after the top singles contest was decided, Kentucky (27-5) got wins from No. 111 Gomez (6-2, 6-1) and No. 22 Rossi (6-2, 6-0) on courts five and three, respectively, to win the match.
The Wildcats, who are just one of two teams in the nation with their entire singles lineup ranked, will face No. 26 Indiana in the Round of 32 Saturday afternoon.
Sayer, will represent Radford in the 2012 NCAA Singles Championships later this month in Athens, Ga., on the University of Georgia campus.
