RADFORD, Va. – An RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Coastal Carolina's Kiana Quolas in the sixth broke a 2-2 deadlock and lifted the second-seeded Chanticleers to a 3-2 win over top-seeded Radford and forced an if necessary semifinal game at 2012 Big South Softball Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting and Brookwood Farms Barbeque Saturday afternoon at RU Softball Field.
The teams will do battle for a spot in the Championship game at approximately 5:00 p.m.
A couple of singles and an intentional walk loaded the bases with one out for the Chanticleers (41-18). Quolas hit a chopper to third that was misplayed, allowing Jessie Winans to scoot home with the winning run. Radford did get an out of the play and got out of the inning without more damage.
The Highlanders (34-20) threatened in the bottom half putting runners on second and third with one out, but Quolas caught
Meredith Moore looking and induced a groundout by
Michelle Beall to end the contest.
Quolas went the distance, scattering six hits and allowing two runs with two strikeouts and two walks. Sarah Maples was a double short of the cycle with a triple and a home run, along with two runs scored.
Coastal struck quickly in the top of the first on a leadoff triple by Maples, followed by a RBI single by Brooke Donovan. Donovan reached second, but junior
Jackie Jenkins settled down to induce two groundouts ending the first.
Radford grabbed its first lead, 2-1, registering two more, two-out runs in the fourth. With runners on second and third after a pair of singles and a sac bunt, junior
Morgan Eye grounded the ball back up the middle to plate
Michelle Beall and freshman
Micalah Sacre.
Maples didn't waste time as she evened the contest at 2-apiece with a one-out solo home run to left in the fifth.
Each team had several opportunities to put more runs on the board, but stranded a combined 17 runners (RU 9; CCU 8).
Michelle Beall finished 2-for-4 with a double.
Micalah Sacre also doubled which tied her with
Kristen Shifflett (2008-11) for the all time mark of 52.
Mickey Dean: “We got exactly what we wanted and didn't finish. In the 7
th, we got the ground ball and misplayed it. We put runners on base and in scoring position, but didn't execute.”
