PALESE CARRIES RADFORD BASEBALL TO 8-2 WIN OVER MARSHALL

BECKLEY, W.Va. – Right-hander Jake Palese went a career-long eight innings with seven strikeouts and Radford scored three runs in the top of the first inning on the way to an 8-2 win over Marshall on Tuesday night.
Ryan Burgess had two hits and three RBIs for the Highlanders (27-24-1), who stopped a four-game losing streak. Four other players had multi-hit games, including Zach Costello, who scored three times. Brett Mollenhauer extended his hitting streak to 14 straight.
Palese (4-2) carried the longest midweek start for a Radford pitcher this season, allowing two runs on six hits without walking a batter. He set a new career-high with his seven strikeouts – the previous best for Palese was four.
The Highlanders had three straight hits to start the game, then got all three first inning runs on bases-loaded walks to claim the early lead.
With two outs in the second inning, Costello was walked and Matt Mack was hit by a pitch with two outs, before an error at first on a comebacker to pitcher Ryan Hopkins off the bat of Matt Hillsinger loaded the bases, setting the stage for a two-run single by Burgess to make Radford's lead 5-0.
Radford added three more runs in the fourth to go ahead 8-0. Costello tripled to lead off the inning, then scored on a passed ball. Mack singled on the play, then Burgess hit a one-out single to bring him home. Blake Sipe's two-out hit brought in Burgess.
Marshall got runs in the fourth and seventh innings – Alfredo Brito and Eric Semeniuk drove in the runs for the Thundering Herd (16-35).
Marshall used nine pitchers – starter Waylon Moore (1-4) took the loss after allowing the first three runs of the game.
Radford resumes Big South play on Thursday, hosting Liberty in a three-game series.
