VOLLEYBALL HEADS TO HAMPTON FOR TUESDAY MATINEE

MATCH NOTES

RADFORD, Va. –
After finishing 2-1 at the SFC Terrier Invitational, the Radford volleyball team continues its four-game road swing at Hampton on Tuesday in a 2:00 p.m. duel with the Pirates inside Holland Hall.

Bronx Bombers
♦  Opening the season at the SFC Terrier Invitational just outside the “Big Apple,” the Highlanders finished with a 2-1 mark, falling in the title match to Maryland Eastern Shore.

♦  After a 3-1 victory in the season opener against NJIT, Radford swept tournament host St. Francis (N.Y.) to start the season 2-0 for the first time since 2008, when the Highlanders began 3-0. RU and UMES met in the title tilt, with the defending MEAC champions taking the 3-1 decision over the Highlanders.

♦  Sophomore Rachel Wiechecki and freshman Cheyanne James had stellar performances while in the Bronx. Wiechecki opened with a double-double against NJIT, notching a match-high 16 kills, to go along with 14 digs. Against UMES, Wiechecki posted her second double-double in as many days with team highs in kills (15) and digs (16).

♦  After narrowly missing a double-double in her first collegiate match with nine kills and 12 digs, James knocked down 12 kills and chipped in 10 digs for her first double-double versus UMES.

♦  Emily Carlin added a career-high 19 digs in the 3-1 victory over NJIT on Friday.

Scouting the Pirates
♦  Hampton enters Tuesday's contest with a 1-3 ledger after opening its 2012 campaign at the North Carolina Central Invitational. The Pirates edged Elon in their season opener, but have lost three straight.

♦  Picked second in the MEAC North behind UMES, Hampton returns eight letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad that nearly doubled its win total from 2010.

The Series with Hampton
♦  Radford owns a 3-0 edge in the series with its in-state foe from the east.
