RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's golf team ventures north to open the 2012-13 campaign at the Bison Intercollegiate hosted by Bucknell Saturday and Sunday. The 54-hole event is being contested on the par 70, 5,863-yard Bucknell University Golf Club.
Beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, Saturday will be a marathon day with each squad playing 36 holes. The 18-hole final round is set for Sunday.
RU fields a lineup that includes Alexandra Austin, Hayley Hammond, Paige Reese, Kirsty Condon and Katie Parrott. Austin was the top finisher of the returnees at last year's Bison Intercollegiate.
The stellar sophomore finished sixth at 223 (78-73-72). Austin had a fabulous freshman campaign that included five Top-10 finishes and a team-best 76.5 stroke average, which ranked sixth in the Big South.
Reese (78.8) and Condon (79.7) also add experience to the lineup. Reese charted two Top-10 finishes in 2011-12 and finished 11th at the Big South Women's Golf Championship last April. Condon also posted two Top-10 performances.
Hammond and Parrott are two additions to a squad looking to improve the program's season stroke average record – a mark that has improved in each of head coach Jeff Beeler's four seasons.
The Highlanders will join the host Bison, Lehigh, Navy, Boston, Seton Hall, Rutgers, Columbia, Wagner, Robert Morris, Saint Francis (Pa.), Saint Francis (N.Y.), Cleveland State, McDaniel and Kutztown at the season-opening tournament.
For Bucknell, the 2012-13 season marks the first year the Bison will not be competing as members of the Big South Conference – the Bison departed for the Patriot League in women's golf.
Bucknell has won their home tournament in each of the last two seasons. Last September, the Bison edged Rutgers by one stroke, while Radford finished fifth with a three-round total of 919 (310-310-299).
