BLACKSBURG, Va. – Radford's Nicholas Sayer and Patrick O'Keefe survived their respective three-set battles to advance in the ITA Atlantic Regional at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Although he had to work an extra set, Sayer's 77th career singles triumph ties the senior with Arthur Vasarevic for third all-time in program history. After dropping the first set (6-3) to Temple's Santiago Canete, Sayer rebounded with 6-2, 6-2 decisions in the second and third sets to move on in the singles main draw.
For O'Keefe, his victory did not come near as easily. Facing Duquesne's Pete Carpenter, the junior suffered a 6-2 setback in the opening frame. In the second set, O'Keefe was pushed to the limit before he outlasted his competitor, 10-8, in the tiebreak to force a deciding third stanza. He used his momentum to cruise to the 6-2 win.
Earlier in the day, Virginia Tech's 17th-ranked and second-seeded tandem of Amerigo Contini and Andreas Bjerrehus defeated Joe Mills and Javier Waase, 8-3, in doubles action to advance to Sunday's round of 16. Sayer and O'Keefe also suffered a loss as Old Dominion's Carlos Lopez Villa and Dante Terenzio prevailed, 8-2, over the Highlander duo.
Action in the main draw for singles continues Sunday when Sayer clashes with ninth-seeded Francisco Dias of George Washington, while O'Keefe battles sixth-seeded Lopez Villa. Results will be posted at this link upon completion of each match.
