LEXINGTON, Va. – Radford women's soccer wrapped up its regular season with a 3-0 victory over VMI on Tuesday afternoon at Patchin Field. With the victory, the Highlanders (14-2-1, 10-1-0) set a Big South record for wins and also secured the outright regular season title.
Radford will host Charleston Southern in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament on Friday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m.
"I was happy with the possession we kept today and we scored a few a few nice goals," said head coach Ben Sohrabi. "It was a good win and we look forward to Friday Big South tournament game at home."
Radford scored early and late in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Freshman Melanie Priestley and senior Rachel Conway scored for the Highlanders, who outshot the Keydets, 11-1, in the first 45 minutes.
Priestley gave Radford a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Following a short scramble after sophomore Asyia Mitchell's shot hit the underside of the crossbar she cleaned up the rebound for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. The Highlanders doubled the score in the 38th minute when Conway bent an upper 90 shot into the back of the net after taking a dish from classmate Lauren Hicks.
Freshman Lexi Denny gave the Highlanders a 3-0 advantage in the 65th minute. A perfect far post service by junior Cate Weaver found Denny's head for the rookie's first collegiate goal. Senior Torrie Jackson set up Weaver's service and was also credited with an assist.
Senior Lauren Markey played the second half and made the lone save as Radford pitched its ninth shutout and 46th in the last four years.
