CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Radford men's tennis team racked up five wins Saturday as play continued at the UVa Fall Classic. The three-day tournament is being contested at the Snyder Tennis Center and the Boar's Head Inn.
Seeded No. 1 in the red singles draw, Patrick O'Keefe defeated East Tennessee State's Ricardo Pabon in the semifinals (6-4, 7-6) to advance to Sunday's championship match at 9 a.m. against Aaron Chaffee of William & Mary.
After splitting his two matches Friday, Nicholas Sayer outlasted Norfolk State's Robin Riethmueller in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 10-3) to advance in the blue singles draw. With his 75th career singles win, Sayer ties former teammate Igor Ogrizek for fourth all-time in program history. The senior collides with Big South rival Garik Yedigarian of Coastal Carolina at 9 a.m. Sunday in an attempt to break the tie.
Joe Mills followed a similar path as he also went 1-1 on the opening day. The senior was impressive in his 6-4, 6-3 triumph over James Madison's Miljna Ruzic in the white singles draw. Like Sayer, Mills faces a league opponent in Liberty's Stan Vaughan for third place. That match is set to start at 12 p.m.
Daniel Myers will seek his first victory at the event when he clashes with JMU's Mason Smith at 12:15 p.m. in the black singles flight, while Javier Waase will try to do the same against Longwood's Mateo Cevallos at 1:30 p.m. in the green singles draw.
In doubles action, Sayer and O'Keefe scored an 8-1 win over George Washington's Nikita Fomin and Viktor Svensson. The Colonials' duo was seeded No. 2 in the orange doubles bracket. Radford's tandem advanced to play VCU's Wider Pimentel and Michal Voscek in the third-place match where the Rams prevailed, 8-4.
Mills and Waase claimed their first victory of the tournament against Longwood's Harry Kelleher and James Fudge, 8-2, in the black doubles draw. Later in the day, the Highlander duo suffered an 8-7 setback to College of Charleston's Rodrigo Encinas and Charlie Ghriskey in the third-place match.
