RADFORD, Va. – Radford plays its second straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe of the season when Lynchburg visits the Dedmon Center for Tuesday's 7 p.m. nonconference women's basketball contest.
MEET THE HORNETS
» Coming off the program's best season in over 25 years, Lynchburg enters the 2013-14 campaign with high hopes. With just one student-athlete lost to graduation and with only two seniors on this season's roster, the Hornets will be a force to be reckoned with in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). All five starters return, and nine of 11 letterwinners.
» LC posted an 18-10 record in 2012-13, the most wins for the program since the 1989-90 campaign. Lynchburg advanced to the ODAC Tournament semifinals, taking No. 1 seed Eastern Mennonite to overtime, the deepest LC has advanced in the tourney since 1989-90.
» Junior Shannon Allan returns after doing nearly everything as a sophomore. The versatile 6-0 forward received a Preseason All-American honorable mention from smallcollegehoops.com after earning first-team All-ODAC and All-State accolades last winter. She averaged 17.9 points per game, grabbed 6.5 rebounds, and led the team with 69 assists, 41 blocks and 45 steals. Allan's .884 free throw percentage ranks fourth in LC history for a single season and her 502 points rank second for a single season.
» Junior post Lauren Penley will anchor a strong unit up front, nabbing third-team All-ODAC honors in 2012-13. She averaged 9.9 points and a team-best 7.0 rebounds per contest. Sophomore Chaney Forbush came on strong in the second half of her first collegiate season to form an impressive duo with Penley. Forbush was third on the team in scoring (8.1), rebounding (6.0) and steals (27) and ranked second in blocks (29).
» Lynchburg brings in five freshmen that will add immediate depth and push the returnees for playing time. Jaimie Grace, a transfer from Texas State, is a 6-2 forward/center that should work her way into the rotation quickly. Charmaine Hairston could bring a new dimension into the LC backcourt once she gets familiar with the system. The 5-3 guard scored 1,243 career points at Franklin County, and was the Western Valley District's Player of the Year as a junior and senior.
» The Hornets were predicted to finish third in the ODAC Preseason poll behind Eastern Mennonite and Guilford.
LYNCHBURG SERIES AT A GLANCE
» Radford and Lynchburg played six times between 1972 and 1977. After dropping their first meeting of the series in the 1972 Virginia State Tournament, the Highlanders won the next five encounters. The two sides have not played since 1977.
» The Hornets are playing Tuesday's game as an exhibition.
LAST TIME OUT
» Behind three double-doubles, Radford downed Emory & Henry, 74-38, Saturday night inside the Dedmon Center.
» Radford won its season opener for the third time in the past four seasons, while Emory & Henry played the game as an exhibition, therefore not counting against its record. Of the nine Highlanders who played tonight, four were making their collegiate debuts.
» Ayana Avery paced the offense by tying her career high of 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Of those seven makes, six were from downtown. In addition to her scoring output, the junior hauled in a career-high 11 rebounds.
» Rachael Ross notched a double-double with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, to accompany her 10 rebounds. Kermisha Clark connected on 5-of-10 from the floor en route to 11 points and a game-high 10 assists. Radford had more than one player produce a double-double for the first time since 2010.
» Overall, RU knocked down 27-of-53 for a 50.9 percent clip. The second half was even better, as the Highlanders torched the nets by shooting 60.9 percent. In addition to holding the Wasps to 19.4 percent shooting, Radford outrebounded its opponent, 51-35.
» Only leading 5-2 at the first media timeout, the Highlanders broke out of their offensive slump when Avery drilled her first 3-pointer of the game to ignite a 10-3 run that catapulted RU in front, 15-5, at the 9:29 mark. After back-to-back buckets by the Wasps to cut Radford's lead to six, the hosts answered once more to push their margin to as many as 23 before heading into break with a 36-15 advantage.
» A 16-4 surge by the Highlanders out of halftime extended their lead to 52-19 with 13:59 to go in the game. Radford cruised from there en route to a successful debut for its first-year head coach.
UP NEXT
» Radford embarks on a six-game road swing beginning Friday, Nov. 15 at Norfolk State. Tipoff with the Spartans is set for 6 p.m. at Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va.
