RADFORD, Va. – After strong individual finishes and two personal records at the Big South Championships, the Radford men's and women's cross country teams will now compete at the 2013 Division I Southeast Regional Championships set for Friday.
Â
The meet, which takes place at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va., will determine the region's team and individual qualifiers for the 2013 NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championships. The Highlanders had the luxury of running on the championship layout in August when they competed in the UVa Duals.
Â
Coming off a fourth-place individual performance at the Big South meet, Teresa Williamson looks to continue her pattern of high finishes. The junior set a personal record at the conference championship, running the course in 18:08.90. She has three top-10 finishes on the season. The other Radford women joining her in Earlysville will be Courtney Burton, Emily Marshall, Courtney Rice, Malina Richardson, Madeline Thomas and Katie Hickey, who also set a PR at the conference meet.
Â
The Radford men were led at the Big South Championship by Ryan Farnan's 25th-place finish. Joining Farnan at the regional will be Chris Weeks, Joey Hannah, Daniel Moniak, Chaz Porter and Alan Weaver.
Â
The runners are all vying for a trip to Terre Haute, Ind. where the NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championships will be contested. Tickets can be punched two ways:
Â
Team Qualification: The top-two teams at each of Friday's nine regional meets will automatically advance. The field will then be rounded off with 13 at-large bids, bringing the total number to 31 men's and 31 women's teams. The 13 selections will be made using a formula based on head-to-head success against other national qualifiers during the season.
Â
Individual Qualification: All runners who place in the top 25 at the regional meet earn all-region honors and become eligible for advancement. The national meet will feature 38 individual competitors not on advancing teams. The top-four finishers from each regional event who are not part of a national-qualifying team will automatically advance and then two at-large individuals will be invited to Terre Haute. The complete field of runners, including at-large selections, will be revealed Saturday on NCAA.com.
Â
Action begins at noon on Friday with the men's 10K event, followed shortly after by the women's 6K race at 1:15 p.m. Live results will be available at the meet's homepage.
