WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Radford opened its season Friday with a 76-54 loss at George Washington. Ya Ya Anderson scored 15 points off the bench to lead the Highlanders.

RU built a 4-1 lead early on the back of two Jalen Carethers dunks, bur the Colonials responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead for good and slowly built the margin. The first half finished with a banked three-point basket at the buzzer by Maurice Creek to give GW a 39-26 lead at intermission.

The Highlanders shot 36 percent in the first half with their two leading scorers with a combined two points. Javonte Green was 1-5 from the field, and R.J. Price did not score in the first 20 minutes. Kion Brown kept the Highlanders within reach with eight first-half points and five rebounds.

Both Green and Price were saddled with foul problems throughout the night, and Radford head coach Mike Jones said his team struggled without their leadership on the floor.

"We are still a relatively young team. When those two aren't on the floor we need our young guys to be more mature. This is college basketball, not high school."

George Washington then used a 16-6 run over the first nine minutes of the second half to put the game away. The Colonials were led by Kethan Savage's 18 points on 7-8 shooting from the floor. Kevin Larsen added 16, and Creek finished with 12. GW's all-conference center, Isaiah Armwood was held without a field goal and to only seven points, but he did grab 12 rebounds.

Radford shot just 31 percent in the final 20 minutes and finished the game 20-60 for 33 percent. The Highlanders' struggled from behind the arc (5-21) and at the free throw line (9-21). RU pounded the offensive glass effectively garnering 15 offensive rebounds, however, GW outrebounded the Highlanders overall, 43-34.

Brown finished with nine points to add to Anderson's team-high 15. Brown and Kyle Noreen each grabbed five rebounds. Rashun Davis and Price dished out three assists apiece. Defensively, the Highlanders forced 17 turnovers  and held a 20-13 advantage in points off those miscues.

Radford hosts Chattanooga at the Dedmon Center on Monday night in the home opener for the Highlanders. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
