APP STATE DOWNS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL, 83-60

RADFORD, Va.  – Radford native Maryah Sydnor scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to lift Appalachian State to the 83-60 win over Radford in nonconference women's basketball action Monday night inside the Dedmon Center.
 
Entering the game 22 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau, the junior forward converted all 12 of her free-throw attempts, with the 10th one coming at the 6:38 mark to help her accomplish the milestone. Sydnor was joined in double figures by Katie Mallow (13 points) and Keke Cooper (11 points and 11 rebounds).
 
The Mountaineers shot 50.9 percent (29-57) to improve to 2-7 on the season. Led by Sydnor's perfect clip, App State converted 82.1 percent (23-28) of its trips to the charity stripe.
 
Not to be outdone, Ayana Avery dropped in a team-high 19 points for the Highlanders (2-7). She drilled three more triples to up her season total to 25, which is the best mark in the Big South. Additionally, the junior sharpshooter passed Corrie Fertitta for fifth all-time in 3-pointers made in program history with 117.
 
Sophomore guard Aisha Foy reached double-figure scoring for the third game in a row, chalking up a career-high-tying 16 points to go along with her career-high three steals. Senior guard Breshara Gordon dished out a career-high seven assists for Radford, which shot 43.4 percent (23-53) for the contest.
 
App State scorched the nets in the opening 20 minutes, knocking down 15 of its 25 shots en route to establishing a 35-20 favor at halftime. After scoring the first eight points of the game, the Mountaineers extended their first-half lead to as many as 17 (23-6) with 9:30 showing on the clock.
 
From that point, the Highlanders responded with a 13-4 surge to trim their deficit to eight (27-19) with 4:01 to go. However, a Rachael Ross free throw was all RU would put on the scoreboard the rest of the frame as App State restored its advantage to double figures at the break.
 
The Highlanders closed the gap to 14 on four occasions during the second stanza, but they could not get any closer as Radford saw its three-game winning streak in the series come to an end.
 
RU continues its three games in five days Wednesday, Dec. 18 against William & Mary. Tipoff with the Tribe (1-6) is set for 7 p.m. at the Kaplan Center in Williamsburg, Va.
