GORDON, McIVOR NET CAREER HIGHS IN 67-53 LOSS AT WILLIAM & MARY

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.  – Guards Breshara Gordon (16) and Kiera McIvor (11) tallied career-high point totals, but William & Mary connected on 14-of-18 free throws in the second half to pull away for the 67-53 victory over Radford in nonconference women's basketball action Wednesday night at Kaplan Arena.
 
Rebounding and turnovers were key for the Tribe (2-6), as the hosts were able to hold off a late rally by RU. Gordon drained a pair of free throws with 9:05 remaining in the contest to help the Highlanders (2-8) regain the lead for the first time since the 7:40 mark of the first frame. A Jordynn Gaymon layup and two more Gordon free throws increased Radford's favor to 47-44 with 7:32 to go.
 
After William & Mary responded with a 14-3 run to go ahead by eight (58-50), Aisha Foy got the hoop and the harm to cut the Highlanders' deficit to five with 1:04 showing on the clock. From there, the Tribe connected on 9-of-10 trips to the charity stripe to seal their victory.
 
In addition to Gordon's and McIvor's career nights, Foy reached double-figure scoring for the fourth game in a row by dropping in 13 points. Ayana Avery tied her career high with five assists to go with her 10 rebounds. Gaymon collected a career-high 14 rebounds. Radford finished at 40.7 percent shooting (22-54).
 
Jazmen Boone chalked up a game-high 20 points, while Kaitlyn Mathieu added 18 points and 11 rebounds. Kyla Kerstetter was credited with a game-high nine steals. In addition to shooting 33.8 percent (22-65), William & Mary forced 24 miscues and won the rebounding battle (41-40). The Tribe held advantages in points off turnovers (15-6) and second-chance points (18-9).
 
Despite Radford shooting 48 percent (12-25) in the opening 20 minutes, the Tribe claimed a 29-24 edge at halftime. Second chances hurt the Highlanders in the first half as William & Mary converted 13 offensive boards into a 14-2 advantage in second-chance points. Gordon hit five of her seven attempts from the floor in the first half en route to 10 points.
 
Radford opens a three-game homestand Saturday when it welcomes New River rival Virginia Tech to the Dedmon Center for a nonconference clash at 1 p.m.
