UGOKA, HOKIES POWER PAST WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va.  – Senior forward Uju Ugoka notched her sixth straight double-double (22 points and 17 rebounds) to guide Virginia Tech to the 82-33 win over Radford in nonconference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon inside the Dedmon Center.

"That is probably the best team we will play all year," head coach Mike McGuire said about the Hokies. "I told the team in the locker room we have went through a challenging nonconference slate. My hope is the girls have learned some lessons from this level of competition that will make us a better team as we dive back into conference play next week."

Entering the game as one of four players in the ACC averaging a double-double, Ugoka reached the mark by halftime behind her 15 points and 10 rebounds. Tech shot 48.6 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of action to stake a 45-14 lead at the break.

At game's end, Ugoka led three Hokies (9-2) in double figures. In addition to Ugoka's output, Maddison Penn dropped in a season-high 15 points behind a 5-for-8 clip from long range. Vanessa Panousis contributed 12 points and a game-high five assists. Taijah Campbell collected 11 of Tech's 58 rebounds.

Ayana Avery paced the Highlanders (2-9) in scoring with nine points behind three 3-pointers, which all came in the second stanza. She increases her season total to 28, which leads the Big South. Aisha Foy added eight points, two assists and two steals. Rachael Ross pulled down a team-best six rebounds.

Radford resumes Big South competition next Saturday, Dec. 28 against Charleston Southern inside the Dedmon Center. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
