SOFTBALL DROPS LEAGUE GAME AT LONGWOOD

BOX SCORE FARMVILLE, Va. – Radford dropped a Big South road game at Longwood, 8-4, on Wednesday afternoon from Lancer Field. In a tight ball game that saw two ties and three lead changes through the first five innings, the Lancers (23-10, 9-4 Big South) pulled away with a four-run sixth to pick up the league victory.

Senior Jessica Agee, sophomore Hilari Hopkins, freshman Nia Chiles and freshman Becky Mantel recorded two hits apiece for the Highlanders (8-18, 1-1), who finished with 11 hits. Despite the 11 hits, Radford left a runner on base in six different innings and nine for the game.

Agee's RBI single in the first gave Radford an early 1-0 lead. With runners on the corners and two outs, Agee's soft liner dropped just in front of the rightfielder, plating Mantel with the first run of the game.

The Lancers answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Two walks sandwiched around a misplayed pop up loaded the bases with no outs. Emily Murphy pushed the two runs across with a soft single to left.

Another two-out RBI single, this time by Hopkins evened the score at 2-2 in the second. Chiles, who led off with a bloop single to left, scored when Hopkins knocked the ball back up the middle.

Radford regained the lead in the third when Chiles' slapped a RBI single in no man's land behind short with two outs, making 3-2.

Three straight two-out singles (two infield) by the Lancers tied the ball game at 3-3 in the fourth.

The Lancers grabbed their second lead (4-3) of the game in the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Carly Adams plated Emily Murphy with the go-ahead run.

Adams (3) and Murphy (4) combined for seven RBI with Murphy also recorded two hits and two runs.

A pair of two-out, two-run singles pushed across four runs to give itself a five-run cushion entering the seventh. With the bases full Murphy's bloop  fell just in front of a diving Morgan Eye in right. Two batters later, Adams laced one back up the middle for the 8-3 lead.

Freshman Rachael Walters started and went 3.2 innings. She allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with one strikeout and two walks. Senior Jackie Jenkins suffered the loss in relief. She surrendered five runs on six hits with three walks in two plus innings of work.

Libby Morris earned the win in relief for the Lancers. She did not allow and earned run and scattered six hits over the final 4.1 innings. Kori Nishitomi was 3-for-3 with a double, run scored and RBI.

Radford returns home for a three-game Big South series against Charleston Southern on April 29 and 30. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and Saturday's single game will start at 1:02 p.m. and be featured on ESPN3.
