INDIANAPOLIS – For the second time in its program history, Radford will be represented at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships as Vincent Wyatt learned Monday he qualified based on being among the top-16 times in the nation for the 60-meter hurdles.
Wyatt became the first Highlander to qualify for the indoor season's national championships since Brian Richotte (weight throw) did so in 2006.
“I am very happy for Vincent and our program,” assistant track and field coach Mark White said. “He worked so hard to get here and to break through and achieve what many student-athletes dream of doing [competing for a national title] is a big deal! It is so tough to make it to the national championships, especially indoors. To be one of the best-16 in your event in the entire country…that is very special!”
Coming off his second straight All-Big South performance at the Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships, Wyatt continued his impressive run with his fifth runner-up showing this season at the VT Final Qualifier last Saturday at Rector Field House.
Entering the final qualifier, his top time of 7.76 was just inside the cut line for nationals. Following Saturday's results around the country, Wyatt's top time was enough to punch his ticket to Fayetteville, Ark.
Through the sophomore's six meets, he has one title and five second-place showings (all in the 60-meter hurdles) to his credit.
The Atlanta, Ga. native holds all 10 of the top indoor marks for the event in program history, including the school record (7.76) ran at the VT Invitational on Jan. 18. His time was the fifth-fastest in the nation and the top mark in the Big South at the time, which earned him Big South Track Athlete of the Week.
The national championships get underway Friday, March 8 and conclude Saturday, March 9. All events will be held at the Randall Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
