SOFTBALL DROPS TWO AT APPALACHIAN STATE

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 BOONE, N.C. – Radford was swept at Appalachian State by the scores of 2-1 and 11-3 in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon from Sywassink/Lloyd Stadium.

In the opener, the Highlanders (17-34) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on junior Jessie Hutchens' home run in the top of the first, but managed just three hits the rest of the game. The Mountaineers (29-18) would score single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to complete their comeback.

Freshman Rachael Walters put in another strong effort, but suffered her third straight one-run loss (four starts) and fourth in last five starts. She allowed an earned run on seven hits with three strikeouts and zero walks.

Hutchens posted RU to its lead with a two-out home run, her team-leading 10th of the season, in the first.

Both teams had bases loaded situations, Radford in the second and ASU in the fifth, but were unable to capitalize.

A leadoff home run by Lindsay Loudermilk evened the contest in the sixth.

The Mountaineers won the game with one out in the seventh as a grounder to third was misplayed, allowing the winning run to easily scoot home from third. A one-out pinch hit single and a double by Sarah Warnock set up the winning run. Warnock finished 3-for-4.

Shivaun Landeros earned the complete game win with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Powered by a five-run first, Appalachian Stet completed the sweep with an 11-3 win in the nightcap. Radford had its opportunities but recorded just four hits and stranded nine runners.

Freshman Megan Honaker singled in each contest to extend her hitting streak to six games.

Three straight singles led to the first run, followed by a two-base error that made it 3-0 before a batter was retired. Two more RBI singles added to the score as the Mountaineers sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame.

Radford cut into the lead with a three-run third taking advantage of two walks and a wild pitch. A pair of one out walks put runner on base and with two down, freshman Emily Naegele roped a RBI double to the fence in left center. She and Hutchens scored on a wild pitch when the throw home eluded the pitcher after the initial runner crossed.

An unearned two-out run on a bloop single to right in the bottom of the third pushed the Mountaineers' lead to 6-3. Three more in the fifth pushed their lead to 9-3.

Senior Jackie Jenkins suffered the defeat in 4.1 innings of work. Four different Highlanders recorded a hit.

Radford closes out regular season play at home this weekend hosting Winthrop on Saturday in a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday in the finale scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
