DRAPER, Va. – Ryan Rettberg, a rising senior on the Radford men's golf team, shot a 5-under-par 137 (67-70) over the weekend to win the Southwest Virginia Amateur played at Draper Valley Golf Club.
 
Playing on a course the Highlanders practice at regularly, the Front Royal, Va. native used his home course knowledge to edge Matt Chandler by one stroke. Rettberg and Chandler entered Sunday tied atop the leaderboard at 4-under-par.
 
In the final round, the duo made the turn tied after both converted birdies at the par-3 seventh hole and the par-5 ninth hole. From there, Rettberg parred the rest of the way in to post one of Sunday's two rounds in red figures.
 
"Normally you can make some birdies out here, but today it was playing tough," Rettberg said. "There was wind and the rough was up. The pins were tucked so pars were good scores."
