CARY, N.C. – Nicholas Sayer and Patrick O'Keefe teamed together to take down Duke's Cale Hammond and Josh Levine to highlight day one action for Radford men's tennis at the Fab Four Invitational hosted by the Blue Devils Friday at Cary Tennis Park.
Placed in the black bracket, Sayer and O'Keefe dispatched Hammond and Levine, 8-6, to advance to the semifinals. In the next round, the Radford tandem ran into 39th-ranked Oliver Pramming and Ignacio Gonzalez of South Florida. The nationally-ranked duo defeated Sayer and O'Keefe, 8-4. They are set to play Duke's Fred Saba and Raphael Hemmeler at 9 a.m. Saturday in the third-place match.
O'Keefe carried his strong play from doubles into singles action, where he was faced with a tall task against 49th-ranked Hemmeler, who is one of eight singles players at the tournament listed in the preseason ITA national rankings. The Salem, Va. native gave all the Blue Devil could handle before falling (6-2, 7-5).
The Highlanders are back on the courts Saturday at 9 a.m. as doubles play continues. Singles action is slated to resume at 10 a.m.
