LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore Grace Sarver captured the Flight 5 singles draw, and then teamed with junior Meg Napolitano to win the Flight 3 doubles crown in leading the Radford women's tennis team Saturday at the Liberty Fall Classic.
Battling Sarah Khan of James Madison in the final, Sarver gutted out a three-set triumph (6-1, 6-7, 10-7). Perhaps her sensational singles play was fueled by Sarver's participation in doubles earlier in the day.
The Bland, Va. native partnered with Napolitano to go unbeaten over the two-day tournament. The Highlander tandem dispatched JMU's Rachel Nelson and Jacqueline Palmucci, 8-6, in the championship.
Napolitano was not too shabby in singles herself. She defeated Nadia Grlj of West Virginia State (6-3, 6-0) in the third-place match of the Flight 6 singles draw.
Also placing third in her respecting draw was Taylor Newman. The junior took down Palmucci in straight sets (7-5, 6-1) of the Flight 2 singles bracket. Continuing in singles, Sara Andrade and Gemma Valls finished fourth and fifth in flights 4 and 1, respectively.
Allison Michael posted a 2-0 mark in the Flight 7A singles draw, while she teamed with Taylor Fay to go 3-0 in Flight 3A doubles. Newman and Gisela Garcia placed third in Flight 2 doubles, cruising to an 8-1 decision over Katie Carlson and Logan Eldridge of Christopher Newport.
Radford returns to the courts Sept. 27-28 to compete in the Hokie Fall Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
