RADFORD, Va. – After a strong showing at the Liberty Fall Classic, the Radford women's tennis team sets its sights on the Hokie Fall Invitational this weekend. The three-day event, which is hosted by Virginia Tech, takes place Sept. 27-29 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
Sophomore Grace Sarver had a stellar weekend in her last time out, going unbeaten and winning the title in the Flight 5 singles draw. She defeated Sarah Khan of James Madison in the final (6-1, 6-7, 10-7) in a gritty three-set match.
Junior Meg Napolitano also had a strong showing in singles, winning the third-place match of the Flight 6 singles draw decisively over West Virginia State's Nadia Grlj (6-3, 6-0). She and Sarver teamed up in doubles to win the Flight 3 title over Rachel Nelson and Jacqueline Palmucci of JMU, 8-6.
In the Flight 2 singles bracket, junior Taylor Newman took the third-place crown, while Sara Andrade and Gemma Valls finished fourth and fifth in their respective brackets.
Taylor Fay and Allison Michael went 3-0 in Flight 3A doubles, and Michael posted a 2-0 showing in the Flight 7A singles draw. Newman and Gisela Garcia placed third in Flight 2 doubles.
The Highlanders and the Hokies will be joined by Liberty, Pittsburgh, JMU, VCU and Maryland.
