BLOCKING PROPELS VOLLEYBALL TO SWEEP OF SAVANNAH STATE

RADFORD, Va. – Behind Rachel Flores' season-high 32 assists, seven digs and seven blocks, the Radford volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 26-24) triumph over Savannah State Friday afternoon inside the Dedmon Center as part of the Highlander Classic.
 
Four different Highlanders (9-4) recorded seven kills in the outing. Savannah Cantrell hit .583 en route to seven kills and a career-high eight blocks. Jordan Watson contributed seven kills and three blocks, while Jesse Miedema and Savanna Burton also chipped in seven kills apiece. Carson Widener delivered a pair of aces, while three Radford players recorded six or more digs in the abbreviated match.
 
Bianca Brochu guided the Tigers with five kills and four digs. Caitlynn Masoe dished out 14 assists in the losing effort.
 
RU held its opponent to under .200 on the attack for the ninth time this season as Savannah State hit .000. The Highlanders blasted 40 kills to SSU's 20 and had a 12-2 edge in blocks.
 
Thanks to a scorching .588 in the opening frame, Radford claimed a 25-12 victory. Watson and Miedema led the way with three kills apiece as the Highlanders took a commanding 15-5 advantage in the middle of the set. The Tigers never recovered as RU earned a 1-0 edge in the match.
 
Watson and Wiechecki knocked down four kills apiece in the second stanza to fuel Radford to a 25-14 win. The Highlanders raced out to a 12-5 lead and never looked back.
 
Trailing 6-3 in the third set, Radford fought back to tie it at 9. The Highlanders led by as many as six (20-14) before SSU rallied to tie the frame at 23. Still tied at 24, Burton and Cantrell ripped rockets to end the match.
 
Radford returns to the court at 7 p.m. to face Tulane in the second match of the Highlander Classic inside the Dedmon Center.
