MIEDEMA PUSHES VOLLEYBALL PAST TIGERS IN THREE SETS

RADFORD, Va. – Senior Jesse Miedema hammered a season-high 12 kills at a .750 rate in leading the Radford volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-5, 25-13, 25-12) decision over Savannah State Saturday afternoon inside the Dedmon Center as part of the Highlander Classic.
 
Savanna Burton also produced a standout performance for the Highlanders (10-5), notching eight kills and nine digs. Rachel Flores delivered a season-high 34 assists, while Kelby Jackson was the lone player of the match with double-figure digs (10). Savannah Cantrell tallied a match-best five blocks.
 
Bianca Brochu, Bryana Gadis and Christian Lyle each knocked down four kills to pace the Tigers (0-15). Caitlynn Masoe dished out 12 assists, while Bridgette Stephens logged seven digs.
 
Radford hit .425 for the match, which is the third-best team attack percentage in program history. The hosts also ripped 40 kills, while limiting SSU to just 16 at a -.092 attack clip.
 
Behind a sizzling .778 attack clip in the opening frame, Radford claimed a 25-5 victory. Jordan Watson and Miedema each blasted five kills to pace the offense. Kristina Cascio was back at the service line for an impressive nine points, delivering two aces in the process, as the Highlanders opened with a 17-2 advantage and never looked back.
 
Already leading 9-5 in the second stanza, Radford reeled off six straight points to burst ahead, 15-5. The Tigers closed the gap to 21-12, but RU earned four of the next five rallies to claim a 25-13 decision.
 
Looking for their sixth sweep of the season, the Highlanders got off to a solid start in the third set behind superior serving by Flores. Ahead 12-5, Radford expanded its lead to as many as 15 before prevailing, 25-12. Cheyanne James and Miedema both rocketed four kills as the Highlanders hit .400 in the frame.
 
Radford returns to action at 6:30 p.m. Saturday to clash with Tulane in the Highlander Classic finale.
