CAMPBELL PULLS AWAY FROM WOMEN’S BASKETBALL IN SECOND HALF

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. – Behind rebounding and a 10-0 run midway through the second half, Campbell was able to pull away for a 75-61 Big South women's basketball victory over Radford inside the Dedmon Center Saturday evening.

"I thought we were never in a flow," head coach Mike McGuire said. "Give credit to Campbell, but I just didn't feel like we ever found our rhythm. The first half was a grind and then in the second half they went on that run and it was difficult for us to come back from that."

The first half was definitely a grind as the Highlanders (3-17, 1-10 Big South) only shot 28 percent on 7-of-25 shooting. Despite their low percentage, they were only down 30-22 at the half.

After a Rachael Ross 3-point play at the 11:54 mark, Campbell (12-8, 7-4 Big South) held RU without a point for the next four minutes while embarking on the 10-0 run that produced the visitors' largest lead of 19 (53-34). Radford got no closer than 10 the rest of the game.

"I know it's not showing up in the win column, but our girls are competing hard and showing a lot of effort," McGuire pointed out. "It's easy to get discouraged and to play timid when things aren't going your way, but they didn't let that affect them. I think that shows the character of our team."

Ayana Avery continued to make it rain from 3-point land with seven more tonight. She finished with a game-high 21 points. Avery is one 3-pointer shy of tying the single-season record, which was set by Patrinda Toney during the 1988-89 season when she drained 67. The junior also tied former teammate Ashley Buckhannon for career 3-pointers made with 158, which is third all-time in program history.

Breshara Gordon (14) and Ross (11) joined Avery in double-figure scoring. Radford finished shooting 37.3 percent from the floor.

RaeChaun Edwards led three Camels in double figures, offensively, with 16 points. Kiera Gaines and Roslyn Presley contributed 15 and 14 points, respectively. Presley added a game-high 12 boards. Campbell shot 42.4 percent for the contest, including 46.7 percent in the second half. The Camels crashed the glass for a 47-32 advantage in rebounding.

Next on the agenda for RU is a two-game road swing through South Carolina, which includes stops at Coastal Carolina (Jan. 30) and Charleston Southern (Feb. 1).
