HIGHLANDERS CLOSE STRONG TO DEFEAT CHARLESTON SOUTHERN, 3-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Radford volleyball came back from an opening-set loss to down Charleston Southern, 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-15), Saturday night inside the Buc Dome. With the win, the Highlanders (15-7, 5-2 Big South) move up into a tie for second place in the Big South standings.

After coming out sluggish in the first frame, Radford heated up its offense and hit over .270 in its final three sets. RU attacked at a sizzling .480 clip in the fourth stanza.

Rachel Wiechecki tallied her 15th double-double of the season, including her fourth in a row, by terminating 17 attacks and digging 11 balls. Emma Deininger and Megan Short joined their teammate in double-figure kills with 14 apiece. Deininger was on swat patrol, rejecting five attacks from across the net.

Jena Braden steered the Highlanders' offense with her season-high 52 assists. She also recorded 10 digs to join the double-double club with Wiechecki. Kelby Jackson and Kaylor Nash each contributed 11 digs in the back row.

Charleston Southern (9-16, 0-7 Big South) was guided by Siraya Windsor's 11th double-double of the season (17 kills and 16 digs). Meredith Parrott buried 15 kills and posted five blocks.

Blocking was a key factor early in the match for CSU. The Bucs ended the match with a 10-7 favor in that category. Their offense was in rhythm as well, striking to the tune of a .371 efficiency in the first set. However, Radford's defense shut CSU down from there by holding the Bucs to .278 in the second, .200 in the third and .032 in the fourth.

The Highlanders now return to the Dedmon Center for a three-match homestand, which begins Friday against Winthrop at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match in support of Dig Pink Night.
