Radford (5-2-2, 2-0-0) looks to maintain its perch atop the Big South Conference standings Saturday when the Highlanders play host to in-state rival Liberty (5-2-1, 0-1-0) at 6:00 p.m. at Cupp Stadium. RU owns the league's longest unbeaten streak at seven games (5-0-2) and has won three straight, including conference wins over Presbyterian and UNC Asheville.
The game will feature the league's best defensive team in Radford and one of the leading offensive teams in the Big South in Liberty. The Flames lead the all-time series 18-13-7, but the Highlanders hold the edge 3-2-1 over the last four years under head coach Marc Reeves.
Our games against Liberty ahve always been very tight contests," Reeves said. "Similar to ourselves, they have played a strong non-conference schedule and we know they are a very good team."
SCOUTING THE FLAMES
Liberty is coming off its first shutout of the season, a 2-0 loss at Winthrop to open Big South play. The Flames have put in 19 goals in just eight games this season, however. Six different players have scored at least two goals. Sachem Wilson leads the team with four tallies. Goalkeeper Scott Sutarik holds a 1.09 goals against average, which only trails the keeper in the other net in this contest.
"Liberty is always a well-organized group," Reeves said. "Coach Alder has some special talented players that he gets the most out of."
THE HIGHLANDERS
Kieran Roberts scored his fifth goal in three games and notched the game-winner in all three victories for RU after a 1-0 win at UNC Asheville on Wednesday. The shutout was the league-leading fourth of the season for the Highlanders and goalkeeper, Aitor Pouseu Blanco. He leads the league in several defensive categories (0.74 goals against average, .781 save percentage, and allowing just seven goals in nine games).
"This is a game we really need an energetic and loud crowd to give us the extra edge," Reeves said. "Our players and staff really appreciate it when the students and community come out in good numbers."
