Owners of the longest unbeaten streak in the Big South Conference, the Radford (6-2-2, 3-0-0) men's soccer team places its eight-game (6-0-2) unbeaten and four-game winning streak on the line Wednesday at Longwood (1-6-1, 0-1-0). Kickoff in Farmville, Va. is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Longwood Athletics Complex. The game is scheduled to be carried live for free on the Big South Network.
Radford head coach Marc Reeves cautioned only seeing the Lancers' record. "This is a tough road game against a team which we know is much better than its record would indicate. They just had a very close game against an exceptionally strong Winthrop team, and we know they be all out for the team points at home."
The Lancers have dropped four straight games, including a 3-2 loss to Winthrop over the weekend. Radford leads the all-time series, 7-5-1.
SCOUTING THE LANCERS
Despite its 1-6-1 overall mark, Longwood has played each of its opponent to a one or two-goal game with the exception of Virginia Tech (L, 4-1). The Lancers defeated VMI in the season opener and tied UNC Greensboro. LU is 0-2-1 at home this season with one-goal losses to Pitt and George Washington. The GW game went to overtime. Zach Crandall and Jonathan Kukapa each lead the team with a pair of goals.
THE HIGHLANDERS
Radford has won four straight games and currently sits atop the Big South standings with nine points. RU leads the league in nearly every defensive category, including five shutouts in 10 games, a 0.67 goals against average, and allowing just seven opponent goals on the season. Aitor Pouseu Blanco has played every minute in goal and also leads the league in save percentage at .781. Jo Vetle Rimstad was named Big South Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after last week's shutouts over UNC Asheville and Liberty.
Offensively, Kieran Roberts is tied for second in goals scored with five and is tied for the league lead in game-winners with three.
"We need to ensure we prepare well and are ready to compete from the first whistle," Reeves said. "I expect our team to be fully energized and eager to perform at our best."
