HIGHLANDERS EDGED BY FLAMES, 2-1, IN FIRST-PLACE BATTLE

LYNCHBURG, Va. – In a midseason Big South battle for first place, Liberty's Crystal Elmers broke a 1-1 deadlock with a goal in the 76th minute and Radford dropped a 2-1 decision on Wednesday afternoon at Osbourne Stadium.

Elmers' goal came when Baylee Gillmore's service went through the hands of a diving keeper and Elmers cleaned up the loose ball for the game winner.

The Highlanders (6-5-2, 3-1-1 Big South) and the Lady Flames (8-3-1, 4-0-1) came into the match tied for first place with 10 points. Despite its first league defeat, Radford currently sits in second place in the standings.

"I thought it was a great game," said head coach Ben Sohrabi. "We matched their intensity and were unlucky not to score another goal with two great chances and win."

Red-shirt sophomore Hannah Thomas scored for the second straight game and freshman Jordan Lundin added another assist after her four-assist effort on Saturday.

The squads scored eight minutes apart and went into halftime tied, 1-1. A Brittany Aanderud penalty kick in the 27th minute gave Liberty a 1-0 lead. The Lady Flames were awarded the penalty kick after an RU defender was whistled for a tackle in the box.

Radford evened the contest in the 35th minute, scoring on another set piece, its fourth over the last two games. Thomas redirected Lundin's free kick with her head and the ball bounced into the back of the net for the equalizer.

The Highlanders had a golden opportunity to take the lead early in the second half but sophomore Hannah Duff's point blank 1v1 effort hit LU keeper Holly Van Noord square in the hands. Duff finished with a team-best three shots.

Van Noord finished with two saves, while sophomore Sydney Chervenic stopped three shots for the Highlanders.

The Highlanders continue their three-game road swing on Saturday taking on UNC Asheville at 2:00 p.m.
