RADFORD SHOWS PROMISE IN SEASON OPENER AT VIRGINIA

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The first half of Sunday afternoon's season opener at Virginia could not have gone much better for the Radford women's basketball team. The Highlanders only trailed 31-21 at the break after dwindling the UVa lead to as little as three. However, the Cavaliers used a 16-1 run midway through the second stanza to gain enough separation to cruise to a 75-47 nonconference win over RU inside John Paul Jones Arena.

"I thought we played really well in the first half…to only be down 10," head coach Mike McGuire offered. "I was very impressed with the way we executed on both sides of the ball in the opening 20 minutes. [Virginia] went to a 1-2-2 fullcourt press coming out of halftime. We knew that was going to be a factor in this game. With a lot of youth on the floor, we kind of panicked and lost our patience. Our inexperience kind of showed during that stretch, then things quickly snowballed from there, and obviously we could not recover. Nonetheless, I love this team. I am excited about this team. We have a lot of potential with this group."

Potential is right. The Highlanders (0-1) had six newcomers, including five freshmen, play their first game in a Radford uniform. One of those freshmen had a double-double in her Highlander debut.

Entering the game at the 17:13 mark of the first half, Janayla White wrecked havoc on the Cavaliers (2-0) from the onset. By the end of the game, the Virginia Beach, Va., native produced a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also blocked two shots. White was an impressive 6-of-7 (85.7 percent) from the charity stripe.

"Janayla was incredible for us today," McGuire expressed. "I thought for a stretch in the first half, she was the best post player in the game on either side. The ceiling for her is extremely high."

Right behind White in the scoring column were Rachael Ross and Jayda Worthy, who delivered nine and eight points, respectively.

However, 20 turnovers proved too costly for Radford. The Cavaliers converted those miscues into a 21-0 advantage in points off turnovers.

Two days after outrebounding Ohio State, 51-40, in its 87-82 victory, UVa was not on the winning side of the rebounding battle against the Highlanders. Three Radford players recorded at least eight caroms as the team outrebounded the Cavaliers, 43-38. RU held Virginia's top rebounder, Sarah Imovbioh, to just nine boards. She set a UVa single-game record with 24 rebounds against the Buckeyes on Friday night.

Imovbioh tallied 14 points to pace four Cavaliers in double figures, offensively. Mikayla Venson (12), Breyana Mason (11) and Faith Randolph (11) also contributed double-digit scoring. Mason also dished out a game-high five assists.

Radford returns home this week for a pair of nonconference tilts inside the Dedmon Center. Thursday's home opener against Norfolk State is scheduled for 5 p.m., and will be followed by the Radford men playing Howard at 7:30 p.m.
