AVERY BREAKS 3-POINTER RECORD IN 75-42 DEFEAT



RADFORD, Va. – Senior guard Ayana Avery broke the Radford women's basketball record for 3-pointers made in a career, but Coastal Carolina used hot shooting and strong guard play to defeat the Highlanders, 75-42, Saturday evening inside the Dedmon Center.
 
"This was not a good effort from start to finish," head coach Mike McGuire pointed out. "You always wonder how a team is going to be after exams, but that's no excuse. I thought we would be anxious to compete and be ready to go today. This game is something we have to learn from. If we're not going to compete…we're not going to give ourselves a chance in the Big South. Our conference is too competitive with teams that want to do well."
 
The Chanticleers (6-2, 1-0 Big South) scored the game's first 12 points before Gaby Gilmore knocked down her first 3-pointer of the season with 11:51 remaining in the first half. Coastal stretched its lead in the opening 20 minutes to as many as 32-17, which was the halftime score.
 
Things only got worse for the Highlanders (2-6, 0-2 Big South) in the second stanza. The Chants shot a scorching 65.4 percent (17-26) and never allowed their lead to dip below 15 points in the final frame.
 
Coastal's guards engineered the offense, combining for 57 of the Chants' 75 points. AJ Jordan led the way with a game-high 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Ced Gibson contributed 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals while running the point. Jas Adams and Stephanie Isaacs delivered 12 and 11 points, respectively.
 
"We knew coming in we would have to do a really good job of defending [Coastal's] guards," McGuire said. "For whatever reason, we weren't up for the challenge today, and as a result, we lost the way we did. Many parts of this game were unacceptable on our end and not what this team was becoming before this game. I thought we made positive strides against William & Mary and Liberty. I feel like in a week we lost that momentum."
 
Once again, Radford struggled to execute on offense. The Chants racked up 16 steals and converted RU's season-high 28 turnovers into 30 points.
 
No Highlander reached double figures, offensively. The closest player was Jordynn Gaymon, who nearly notched her second double-double of the season with eight points and nine rebounds.
           
Radford will look to rebound Monday night when Wofford visits the Dedmon Center for a 7 p.m. tip.
