Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

AVERY’S SEASON-HIGH EFFORT LIFTS RADFORD OVER WOFFORD, 60-59

RADFORD, Va. – Behind a season-high 25 points from Ayana Avery, which included the go-ahead basket with 1:06 remaining, the Radford women's basketball team erased a four-point deficit late in the game to edge Wofford, 60-59, in nonconference action Monday night inside the Dedmon Center.

Trailing 59-55 with 3:38 showing on the clock, the Highlanders (3-6) seemed to be on their way to their fourth consecutive loss. However, a pair of seniors prevented that from happening.

Following a defensing stop, senior forward Jordynn Gaymon made a nifty spin move in the paint and finished with her right hand to bring Radford within 59-57 at the 2:19 mark.

Moments later, Gaymon delivered another huge shot in the arm for the Highlanders when she picked Jordan Frazier's pocket for a steal. Her heroics eventually led to the game-winning 3-pointer from Avery, which was shot at least five feet beyond the arc. RU dodged a few bullets in the waning seconds to secure its third win of the season.

"I was curious to see how we would respond after Saturday's game," head coach Mike McGuire noted. "We talked a lot about mentality, moving forward and showing character today. I thought we did those things. We were down four at the last media, so to come back and find a way to win the game was great. That says a lot about what this team wants to do, and how they want to compete."

Each time the Highlanders attempted to pull away, Wofford (3-6) countered. In fact, neither team led by more than nine points. Although Radford maintained the lead for the majority of the game, the Terriers finally grabbed their first lead with 7:21 left in the contest.

"Wofford is a good team," McGuire offered. "Wofford has had some success against some teams in our conference. We knew this was going to be a tough ballgame. They are well coached. But I thought we had some resiliency today, and we needed to show that. There are a lot of things we need to improve, obviously, but we will take this win."

The outcome might not have been possible without Avery. The 5-foot-5 sharpshooter finished 9-of-15 from the floor, including 5-of-9 from long range en route to her season-high point total. She also added seven rebounds.

For the second straight game, Gaymon manufactured a solid effort with eight points and nine rebounds. Gaymon hit four of her six attempts from the hardwood and delivered a game-high three blocks.

RU outshot the Terriers, 42.0-33.3, and outrebounded the guests, 44-36. Nonetheless, turnovers remain a problem for the Highlanders. They committed 25 on the night, including 14 in the opening stanza.

Wofford, which entered the game with a 2-1 record against Big South teams, was led by Frazier's 24 points. Maria Corella joined her teammate in double figures with 12 points.

The Highlanders wrap up their four-game homestand with Thursday's tilt with West Virginia State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Dedmon Center.
