RADFORD CONCLUDES HOMESTAND WITH THURSDAY TILT AGAINST YELLOW JACKETS

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball team wraps up its five-game homestand Thursday at 7 p.m. against West Virginia State inside the Dedmon Center.

SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA STATE
The Yellow Jackets, who compete in the Mountain East Conference (Division II), carry a 2-5 record into Thursday's game. They are winless in their two road contests, dropping decisions to Kentucky State (61-47) and Shepherd (58-53).

These two programs have not met since Dec. 19, 1987 –– a game which Radford won. The Highlanders have not played a Division II opponent since Nov. 16, 2011, when they defeated Winston-Salem State, 69-46, inside the Dedmon Center.

WVSU boasts a lanky starting lineup with four of its five starters standing over six feet. The only starter not making that mark, Deyahnna Styles, leads the Yellow Jackets in scoring at 12.3 points per game.

Post players Shealyn Shafer and Alexus Hobbs average 11.3 and 10.6 points per game, respectively. Hobbs is West Virginia State's leading rebounder at 9.3 boards per game.

RU (3-6) will be looking to remain in the win column following its 60-59 triumph over Wofford, Monday night. With a victory, the Highlanders will even their nonconference mark at 4-4 and secure the program's 650^th win all-time.

On the strength of her season-high 25 points against Wofford, senior Ayana Avery paces the offense with her 11.1 points per game. She is the Highlanders' top threat from beyond the arc. The 5-foot-5 guard has a team-high 22 3-pointers through nine contests. Her 2.44 3-pointers per game rank second in the Big South.

In addition, the Cleveland, N.C., sharpshooter is inching closer to the 1,000-point club. Avery has 970 points through 97 career games played. She would become the 21st member of the group.

Over in the rebounding department, senior Jordynn Gaymon pulls down eight caroms per contest. Her average ranks seventh in the conference. Freshman Janayla White is right behind with her 7.4 average, which is tied for ninth. On top of her rebounding, White ranks fifth in the Big South in blocks per game, rejecting 1.89 shots per outing.

UP NEXT
Before leaving for Christmas, the Highlanders will make the short trip to Blacksburg to clash with Virginia Tech. The two sides will meet for the 33^rd time Sunday at 1 p.m. inside Cassell Coliseum.
