SOFTBALL'S RALLY FALLS SHORT IN SERIES FINAL AT CAMPBELL

BOX SCORE

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Radford's rally came up a run short as it fell to Campbell, 5-4, in the rubber game of its three-game Big South opening series at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

After getting to within 5-4, the Highlanders (7-16, 1-2 Big South) had great scoring opportunities in the sixth and seventh innings to tie and go ahead. However, they were stymied by Julia Callicutt, who earned the two-inning save, recording all six of her outs via the strikeout with one walk and just one hit for the Camels (19-14, 5-1).

In the sixth, Radford put a runner in scoring position with one out. Back-to-back strikeouts, sandwiched by a steal of third ended the scoring threat.

Following a one-out single by freshman Julie Gardner and walk to Davis in the seventh, a three-pitch strikeout put RU down to its last out. Gardner and Davis advanced on a wild pitch. However Callicut after having four pitches fouled off, ended the game sixth straight strikeout.

The Highlanders left nine runners on base for the game.

Sophomore Whitney Davis was 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored.

Milly Martinet put the Camels on the board first with a three-run home run with one out in the third. She went down a got a hold of a low pitch on a full count for her NCAA leading 13th of the season.

Sophomore Hayley Tabora provided the Highlanders with its first hit and run, sending the first pitch she saw over the leftfield fence in the fourth, cutting their deficit to 3-1.

However, Campbell extended its lead to 5-1 in the bottom half of the frame on a RBI triple by Brittany Bruce, followed by a run scoring infield single by Kirstine Womack.

The Highlanders made it a one-run game in the fifth, courtesy of a two-out two-run triple to rightfield by Whitney Davis. Davis scored on an error by the third baseman to make it 5-4.

Sophomore Rachael Walters started and went three innings. She suffered the defeat, allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Freshman Abby Morrow went the final four inning, surrendering two runs on three hits with a strikeout.

Radford hosts Charlotte on Wednesday, March 26 in its long awaited home opener. First pitch of the twinbill at the newly renovated RU Softball Field is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
