ROUND 3
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Radford men's golf team climbed to third place to notch its sixth Top 5 of the season Tuesday following the final round of the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate hosted by William & Mary at Kingsmill Resort's River Course (par 70, 6,765 yards).
Â
Entering the day one shot behind third-place James Madison, RU carded a 287 to leap the Dukes. Radford finished with a three-day total of 865 (294-284-287).
Â
With three of its golfers shooting even-par Tuesday, No. 50 Texas Tech pulled away from the field. The Red Raiders' 851 (288-278-285) beat No. 48 UNC Greensboro's 864 (293-286-285) for the team title. JMU took fourth place at 872 (295-282-295), while Miami (OH) secured fifth at 875 (298-286-291).
Â
Overnight leader Ryan Rettberg was poised to capture his first collegiate title, getting to 2-under-par early in his round behind three-straight birdies at holes 6-8. However, as weather conditions deteriorated, scoring became much more difficult. Despite the adversity, Rettberg managed to earn his best collegiate finish as a Highlander by tying for fourth at even-par 210 (69-67-74).
Â
Recording his second-straight Top-20 finish, Nick Brediger tied for 19th at 219 (76-71-72). The freshman added 16 pars to his collection during the final round, meaning he parred 44 or 81.5 percent of his 54 holes.
Â
Also tying for 19th at 219 was Tanner Carbaugh, who fired rounds of 73, 74 and 72. Callum Tarren raced up the leaderboard behind his fifth under-par round of the season. The senior signed for a 1-under-par 69 to finish at 221 (76-76-69) and tie for 34th. Rounding out the lineup was Conner Hayden, who tallied a 232 (79-72-81) to tie for 96th.
Â
Texas Tech's Clement Sordet claimed medalist honors at 2-under-par 208 (71-67-70), edging teammate Matias Dominguez and UNCG's Roy Dixon by one stroke.
Â
Radford travels to Spartanburg, S.C. for its final tuneup prior to the conference championship. The Highlanders tee it up April 14-15 at the Coca-Cola Invitational, which will be hosted by Wofford at The Country Club of Spartanburg.
