HOKIES DEFEAT VOLLEYBALL IN STRAIGHT SETS

BOX SCORE

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Radford volleyball team put up a valiant effort against Virginia Tech Saturday morning, but the Hokies strung together timely rallies late in each set to defeat RU (25-22, 25-18, 25-21) in the third match of the Hokie Invitational inside Cassell Coliseum.

"Overall, I'm pleased with the way we came out and competed," head coach Marci Jenkins said. "Virginia Tech is as good of a team as we have played this year. That being said, we hung in there with them. We will regroup and get ready for UNC Wilmington, which is another really good team."

Emma Deininger unleashed a team-best nine kills at a .467 clip to lead Radford (9-4) on the attack. Jena Braden posted a match-high 27 assists. On the defensive side, Savannah Cantrell contributed five blocks, while Kelby Jackson and Savanna Burton recorded 17 and 10 digs, respectively.

As a team, the Highlanders finished with a .122 attack rating. Across the net, Tech (6-6) hit .200 and held slim advantages in digs (49-48) and blocks (7-6).

Lindsey Owens, who was named to the ACC all-freshman team in 2013, speared the attack for the Hokies with her 12 kills. Kathryn Caine joined Owens in double figures with 10 winners on 15 swings (.600).

Jordan Fish and Kyra Coundourides set up the offense with 19 and 15 assists, respectively. Megan Beckwith delivered 12 digs while Ashley Battle chalked up five blocks to direct the Tech defense.

RU returns to the court later today as it concludes the Hokie Invitational with a 5 p.m. match against UNC Wilmington.
