LIBERTY PREVAILS IN FOUR SETS OVER HIGHLANDERS

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Despite a pair of double-doubles from Rachel Wiechecki and Jena Braden, the Radford volleyball team could not overcome slow starts as Liberty defeated the Highlanders in four sets (25-21, 23-25, 26-24, 25-13) Friday night in the Big South opener for both teams inside the Vines Center.

Radford was held to .135 on the attack, while the Lady Flames (13-5, 1-0 Big South) hit .254 for the match. Impressive defense from Liberty's back row fueled its decisive 87-71 advantage in digs.

Led by Savannah Cantrell's match-high eight blocks, the Highlanders (10-5, 0-1 Big South) did out-block LU, 11-9. However, RU struggled to get anything going offensively. Wiechecki and Maddie Palmer were the only Highlanders to reach double figures, hammering down 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Wiechecki also guided the digs department with 20 to chart her ninth double-double of her senior campaign.

Braden finished with 33 assists and 16 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Kelby Jackson (13) and Savanna Burton (10) also checked in with double-digit digs.

Caroline Douglas blasted a match-high 21 kills to pace the Liberty attack. Hannah Weidner was right behind with 17 kills on 37 swings (.351). At the setter position, Caila Stapleton dished out 48 assists and 25 digs. Stapleton led four Lady Flames with double-figure digs.

Radford changes gears to nonconference play when the Highlanders visit East Tennessee State for Tuesday's 6 p.m. match in Johnson City, Tenn.
