CAMPBELL UPENDS RADFORD IN OVERTIME, 65-62



BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Facing its largest deficit since Dec. 21 of last year, Radford mounted a 15-1 run that forced overtime and enabled the Highlanders to capture a 61-57 edge in the extra session. However, Campbell ended the game on an 8-1 streak to come from behind and earn a 65-62 Big South women's basketball triumph over RU Saturday afternoon inside Gore Arena.
 
Following a pair of Jordynn Gaymon free throws, which gave the Highlanders (8-9, 5-3 Big South) a 46-45 favor, the Camels embarked on an 11-0 surge, propelling the hosts in front, 56-46, with 4:57 remaining in the game.
 
At that point, the youthful Highlanders could have easily thrown in the towel. All the momentum had swayed to the home side. Not to mention, the raucous crowd of nearly 1,000 was standing in applause of the team donning the white uniforms with black and orange trim.
 
However, Radford has grown since its 3-8 start to the season. This team may have folded earlier in the year. Not now. Much progress has been made under second-year head coach Mike McGuire, and that progress was on display in the final 4:57 of regulation. Instead of allowing the Camels to cruise to another home victory, RU delivered the aforementioned 15-1 run, including an 11-0 spurt to grab a 57-56 lead with 2:16 left in regulation.
 
Campbell's Kiera Gaines converted 1-of-2 free throws with 40 seconds to go to tie the score at 57 and extend the game an additional five minutes.
 
In the extra period, Aisha Foy and Gaymon scored to open up a four-point lead (61-57) for the Highlanders midway through the overtime. From there, the Camels ended the game on an 8-1 surge to improve to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the Big South. In addition to taking over sole possession of third place in the league, Campbell moved to 8-1 at home this season.
 
"This was a hard-fought, tough basketball game," McGuire said afterward. "I thought both teams were competitive. Credit to Campbell for making some big plays toward the end of overtime. They made it incredibly tough for us to score. Today is going to be a good lesson for us. To compete in the top half of the Big South, we cannot be tentative like we were in the first half. But Campbell is very good, very well-coached. We are going to take this game and learn from it."
 
Ayana Avery torched the nets for 19 points, which included five 3-pointers. Gaymon joined her classmate in double figures with 12 points and seven rebounds. Janayla White contributed eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Fellow freshman Jayda Worthy dropped in nine points.
 
For the second straight game, the Highlanders were outrebounded. Campbell crashed the glass for a 44-33 advantage. Radford's 33 rebounds were the fewest of the season. RU outshot the hosts (42.3-38.7 percent), but struggled with Campbell's trapping defense—committing 21 turnovers.
 
Summer Leverette pace four Camels in double figures with 19 points. Summer Price (18), RaeChaun Edwards (11) and Amanda Coffer (10) also reached double digits.
 
Radford remains on the road for Tuesday's battle at UNC Asheville. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Kimmel Arena in Asheville, N.C.
