Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

RADFORD’S DEFENSE STYMIES BLUE HOSE, 43-35

CLINTON, S.C. – Opponents only averaged 49.3 points per game and 33.4 percent shooting, which ranked third and 10th in the nation, respectively. Behind the 3-point line, opponents were only hitting 22.8 percent of their attempts, which ranked fifth in the nation. Thirteen of the team's 14 opponents had failed to reach 60 points in a game.

Those aforementioned stats belonged to Presbyterian College entering Thursday night's Big South women's basketball showdown with Radford inside the Templeton Center.

However, after watching the Highlanders showcase their own defensive ability in a 43-35 triumph over PC, fans in attendance would have thought those stats belonged to the team in the blazing red uniforms.

Radford (6-8, 3-2 Big South), which has won three in a row, was locked in for nearly the entire 40 minutes on defense en route to holding the Blue Hose (7-8, 2-4 Big South) to 21.1 percent shooting—its lowest of the season.

"What I am most proud of today is our defensive effort," head coach Mike McGuire conveyed. "Presbyterian runs so many set plays, and our young ladies did a great job. A lot of shots were contested, and we had a tremendous effort on the boards today. To come in here and outrebound them by 15, that's a big effort on the boards."

In Presbyterian's five previous home games, the Blue Hose were outrebounding its opponents by an average of 13 per contest. Thursday was a different story as the Highlanders established a 49-34 advantage on the glass.

A large part of Radford's success in the rebounding department can be attributed to freshman Janayla White, who hauled in a season-high 16 rebounds. The Virginia Beach, Va., native became the first Highlander to grab at least 15 rebounds in a game since Brooke McElroy collected 15 at Coastal Carolina on Feb. 14, 2011. She added nine points to narrowly miss her fourth double-double of the season.

Fellow Tidewater resident Aisha Foy dropped in a game-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting to reach double figures for the sixth time this season.

"When you play Presbyterian, you know you are going up against a very well-coached team," McGuire pointed out. "Coach [Ronny] Fisher does an outstanding job. Presbyterian does not beat themselves. You got to find ways to contest all their shots and find ways to score against their zone. I didn't think the game would be this low scoring, but Presbyterian wants the game in the 40s and 50s."

In that case, PC got what it wanted. However, the Blue Hose were held to its second-lowest scoring output of the season. Only Old Dominion (26), held Presbyterian lower in the scoring column. That game was the season opener for the Blue Hose.

Janie Miles led PC in scoring with 14 points, which included nine in the opening stanza. The Blue Hose, who lost at home for the first time this season (5-1), suffered its first defeat to RU since March 8, 2013.

Radford, which has won three games in a row for the first time since March 2013, closes a stretch of three games in six days with a trip to Farmville, Va., for Saturday's 2 p.m. in-state clash with Longwood inside Willett Hall.
