CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss at Charleston Southern in Big South Conference play Thursday morning.
In a match played on an already wet field and with more light rain falling, the host Buccaneers (3-4-2, 1-2) scored in the 15th and 71st minutes to take the victory.
Goalkeeper Katie McCormick recorded a season-high 12 saves for the Highlanders (5-6, 0-3).
Charleston Southern got on the board when leading goal scorer Anna Sells intercepted a cross-field pass, made a couple of dribbles and put a low shot into the right corner for her fifth tally of the season.
McCormick made nine of her stops in the first half, including several tip saves, to keep it a one-goal game as CSU had a 14-9 shot advantage in opening 45 minutes.
For Radford, Jordan Lundin put a pair of shots on goal and Ana Revollo had an opening off a deflection following a corner kick, but her shot went wide.
Asyia Mitchell then set up an opportunity for the Highlanders early in the second half, making a run around the CSU defense to the end line right of the goal and sending a pass in front. The ball made its way to the foot of Hannah Duff, but her shot went just wide of the left post.
Radford continued to control much of the possession and McKensey Zieger forced a diving save by the Charleston Southern goalkeeper before CSU got its second goal off a scramble in the box after McCormick tried to knock it out.
The Buccaneers finished the game with a 22-20 edge in shots, including 14-11 on goal, while the Highlanders had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Duff and Lundin each had four shots apiece and Mitchell had three.
"We had our chances to make this game go differently," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "They capitalized on a mistake early. We created several good chances in the second half but in the end didn't finish those chances."
McCormick's 12-save performance was one off her career high, set last year against Howard.
Radford will head back out on the road to face Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C. on Saturday for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
