Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

RADFORD DOWNS GARDNER-WEBB, 2-1, FOR FIRST BIG SOUTH WIN

RADFORD, Va. – This time, the Radford women's soccer team came out on the right end of a one-goal decision, getting goals by Sammie Shiflette and Jessica Wollmann to defeat Gardner-Webb 2-1 Wednesday and break through for its first Big South Conference victory of the season.

Shiflette found the net for the second straight game, while Wollmann delivered the eventual game-winner as the Highlanders (6-9-0, 1-6-0) broke a six-game losing streak, which included four defeats by the single-goal margin. Shelby Hooe scored her team-high seventh goal for Gardner-Webb (4-8-3, 1-4-1).

Ana Revollo had the primary assists on both goals, while Hannah Duff also notched two helpers. Katie McCormick recorded seven saves, including five in the second half to preserve the lead.

Shiflette got the Highlanders on the board in the 17th minute with her second career goal. Shannon Nasca made a move by a defender on the right side and sent a pass into the top of the box that Duff deflected to Revollo. The freshman fed it forward to Shiflette and she pivoted and finished with a left-footed shot in front.

Wollmann then made it 2-0 in the 55th minute. Asyia Mitchell started the play with a run up the left side and crossed to Duff, whose shot was blocked by a Gardner-Webb defender. The ball deflected to Revollo and she quickly passed it over to Wollmann, who put it into the open net for her second of the season.

Gardner-Webb cut the deficit back to one less than a minute later as Hooe put a shot from the top of the box into the upper right corner.

The Highlanders tried to regain the two-goal advantage over the next 20 minutes, putting three shots on goal, including a blast by defender Miranda Carlson that forced a tip over the crossbar by Gardner-Webb keeper Keely Brown.

The Runnin' Bulldogs were only able to attempt two shots in the final 10 minutes of play with McCormick making the save on one and Radford's defense blocking away the other. The Highlanders then controlled the ball over the last two minutes to run out the clock.

"I'm just really proud of our team and their resiliency," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "They have every reason to quit and they don't. Honestly, we played the same tonight as we've played in the other games, we just got the result tonight. But I'm real proud of the resiliency."

The Highlanders finished the game with a 20-19 edge in shots and a 9-7 advantage on corners. Shiflette, Wollmann and Jasmine Casarez each had a team-high three shots, while three others contributed two and five more recorded one.

Radford will now play its next two matches on the road, beginning with Saturday's 7 p.m. kickoff at High Point.
