WOMEN’S BASKETBALL EDGED, 54-53, AT YOUNGSTOWN STATE

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: Youngstown State 54, Radford 53
  • Records: Radford (1-2) | Youngstown State (3-0)
  • Location: Beeghly Center | Youngstown, Ohio

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sarah Cash converted two free throws with three seconds remaining to lift Youngstown State to a 54-53 non-conference women's basketball win over Radford Friday night inside the Beeghly Center.
  • Prior to Cash's free throws, Jayda Worthy knocked down the go-ahead bucket for the Highlanders with five seconds to go.
  • After a YSU timeout, which under new NCAA rules advanced the ball to the frontcourt, the Penguins were able to draw up a play that led to an RU foul.
  • The Highlanders got out to a solid start, leading by nine (20-11) with 4:54 remaining in the opening stanza.
  • YSU scored 11 of the final 16 points of the first half to trim its deficit to three (27-24) at the break.
  • The third quarter featured five ties and four lead changes before the Penguins carried a 38-36 favor into the final 10 minutes.
  • YSU stretched its lead to as many five (51-46) with 2:55 to go before Radford engineered a 7-1 run capped by Worthy's jumper with five seconds remaining.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Alexis Jackson led all scorers with a season-high 15 points on 6 of 10 shooting. It was her second straight double-figure scoring effort. Eleven of her game-high total came in the opening 20 minutes of action.
  • Worthy, one of three Highlanders making a return to their home state of Ohio, finished with her third career double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds).
  • She posted a career-high five blocks in her 34 minutes of court time.
  • Radford swatted 10 shots for the game, marking the most blocks since Jan. 24, 2015 when the Highlanders recorded 11 vs. High Point.
  • RU earned advantages in field goal percentage (.426-.308), rebounding (34-32), blocks (10-0), assists (9-7), points in the paint (30-18) and bench points (21-14).
  • However, the Highlanders' 21 fouls contributed to YSU visiting the charity stripe 17 more times than them, which resulted in a 13-point differential.
  • Sixteen of the Penguins' 30 second-half points came from the free-throw line.
  • Cash, who finished with a team-high 13 points, delivered the game-winning free throws for the second straight home game. YSU edged Canisius in its season opener behind a pair of Cash free throws.
  • The Penguins only knocked down four of their 3-point attempts. Their season average entering the game was 6.5.
  • YSU improved to 3-0 for the third time in the last four years.

QUOTABLE
  • "I am very disappointed in our overall performance tonight. We did not put our best foot forward to compete and win the game. I told the team after the game that I take full responsibility for the performance. There is no excuse in what happened tonight. I credit Youngstown State on being the tougher team and wanting the game more than we did. We will get better this week, and we will play a lot harder next Saturday." ~ Radford head coach, Mike McGuire

UP NEXT
  • Radford has an eight-day break between games, as the Highlanders do not play again until Nov. 28 vs. Lees-McRae.
  • Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. inside the Dedmon Center.
