RADFORD VISITS HOWARD SATURDAY IN JONES’ HOMECOMING



SETTING THE STAGE
  • The Radford men's basketball team plays its last game before exams, traveling back to the nation's capital for a second time this season as it plays at Howard in a Saturday afternoon matchup.
  • Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. inside Howard's Burr Gymnasium.
  • Mike Jones returns to his alma mater for the first time as a collegiate head coach. He served as an assistant for the Bison for three years following his standout playing career at the school.
  • Series: Series tied, 2-2
  • Last meeting: Radford 61, Howard 52 (Nov. 20, 2014)
  • It will be the Highlanders' second visit to Howard, but first since December of 2003 when they came away with a 66-65 victory.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 5-5
  • Radford looks to snap a two-game losing streak and notch its third road victory of the season.
  • The frontcourt duo of Brandon Holcomb and Kion Brown had their best collective effort of the year against Virginia Tech on Wednesday, with both notching season highs while combining for 25 points and making 10 of 14 shots.
  • Holcomb 13 points and 11 rebounds were both one shy of career highs. He now leads the team with 5.6 boards per game and also tied Eric Parker for third place on the program's blocked shots list with 124.
  • Cameron Jones averaged 18.5 points and made 8 of 15 3-point attempts in the last two games. He is sixth in the Big South in 3-point percentage (.424) and seventh in made 3-pointers per game (2.5).
  • Rashun Davis continues to rank first in the conference with 5.4 assists per game. He has 362 for his career within seven of equaling R.J. Price for fifth on the program's all-time list.
  • The Highlanders have totaled at least 12 offensive rebounds in the last four games and remain the conference leader with 13.7 offensive rebounds per game. Ed Polite, Jr. is tied for second individually with 32.  
  • RU will try to break out of an offensive slump that has seen the Highlanders average just 61.8 points the last four games, while shooting 38 percent from the field and just 24 percent from behind the arc.
  • For the season, Radford is hitting on 47 percent of its shots in the second half, compared to 36 percent in the first 20 minutes.
  • RU is 30-11 all-time against MEAC opponents and has won its last three matchups. Its last loss was at Hampton two seasons ago.
 
SCOUTING HOWARD
  • Record: 6-4
  • Howard had won six of seven games before an undermanned squad fell at unbeaten No. 11 Purdue on Wednesday night.
  • The Bison feature the nation's leading scorer in junior guard James Daniel III. The product of Hampton, Va. is averaging 28.4 points per game, but he did not play against Purdue due to a toe injury.
  • Daniel was one of three starters to miss the game, along with junior guard James Miller (fractured hand) and junior forward Solomon Mangham (high ankle sprain). Junior Damon Collins did not play in the second half with an illness and junior Kofi Andoh suffered a broken nose.
  • Miller was averaging 15.0 points per game, Mangham was at 7.2 points and 6.4 rebounds and Collins contributes 11.6 points and 4.2 rebounds.
  • Marcel Boyd, a 6-foot-10 center, leads the team in rebounding with 8.6 per game and has had four games with double-digit rebounds. He is scoring 7.9 points a contest and has recorded 13 blocks.
  • Daniel has had four games with 30 or more points this season, including 39 in a 79-77 victory over William & Mary. He is shooting 42 percent from the field, including 40 from 3-point range.
  • In last year's meeting with Radford, Daniel scored 16 points, while Miller had a game-high 19.
  • The Bison are 3-0 at home this season and also ended NC Central's 38-game homecourt winning streak. Two of their other losses came at UMass (by six) and at Rutgers (by 12).

  • After taking the week off for exams, Radford returns to game action Saturday, Dec. 19 at home against UNC Wilmington.
