RADFORD’S UPSET BID COMES UP SHORT IN 47-40 LOSS AT VIRGINIA TECH

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: Virginia Tech 47, Radford 40
  • Records: Radford (4-6) | Virginia Tech (11-1)
  • Location: Cassell Coliseum | Blacksburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Radford played with great intensity and purpose Monday afternoon in the 34th meeting with its New River Valley rival Virginia Tech. However, the Highlanders' upset bid came up just short in a 47-40 setback in non-conference women's basketball action from Cassell Coliseum.
  • RU came out on fire, knocking down their first seven shots from the floor to mount a 16-6 lead less than six minutes into the contest. Jayda Worthy scored seven of her team-best 11 points during the game-opening run.
  • Tech countered with a 10-3 run to close the gap to three (19-16) with 4:36 remaining in the second quarter.
  • Janayla White and Lydia Rivers converted two free throws apiece to set the Highlanders' halftime advantage at 23-18.
  • After Worthy opened the third quarter with a layup, the Hokies embarked on a 13-0 run to jump on top, 31-25.
  • RU was able to regain the lead (37-36) on a Worthy layup with 7:24 to go in the game, but Tech ended on an 11-3 surge to edge past the Highlanders.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The 34th meeting between the two New River Valley programs was the lowest scoring game in the head-to-head series. Both teams combined to score 87 points. The previous lowest combined score was 108 points—a 66-42 win for the Hokies in Radford on Jan. 2, 2000.
  • Radford held Tech to 4 of 12 shooting (33.3 percent) in the first quarter. Meanwhile the Highlanders scorched the nets in the opening 10 minutes, going 7 for 9 from the hardwood (77.8 percent).
  • Tech's 18 points were the fewest scored by the Hokies in the first half this season.
  • The Hokies, who are receiving votes in the national rankings, shot a season-low 28.6 percent. On the other hand, Radford shot 38.9 percent from the floor. Tech attempted 20 more shots than the Highlanders.
  • Radford struggled against the fourth-ranked scoring defense in the nation, turning the ball over a season-high 21 times.
  • Tech entered the game ranked 18th, nationally, in 3-point shooting. However, the Hokies were held without a 3-pointer (0-15) for the first time since Feb. 3, 2013 (at Miami).
  • Foy joined Worthy in double-figure scoring for the Highlanders with 10 points.
  • RU, which ranks second in the Big South in blocks per game, recorded seven against the Hokies. White tied her career high with four rejections.
  • Tech's top two leading scorers, Vanessa Panousis (12.6 ppg) and Hannah Young (11.3 ppg), were held to two points apiece and a combined 1 for 12 from the floor.
  • Regan Magarity led the Hokies in the scoring column with a season-high 16 points.

QUOTABLE
  • "I thought we started the game with really good focus and when they went to zone, we were able to get really good shots. The third quarter, I thought Virginia Tech made it really hard for us. There was nothing clean, nothing easy, and they pushed our offense closer to halfcourt. They showed why they're a top defensive team. Nothing was easy for us in the second half. I loved our start and effort. We just have to learn to execute when things are a little more challenging. If we treat every game like this one, I think we are going to be very competitive." ~ Radford head coach, Mike McGuire

UP NEXT
  • Radford dives back into Big South competition with a Dec. 29 home bout with Coastal Carolina.
