RADFORD TRAVELS TO COASTAL AIMING FOR 2-0 LEAGUE START SUNDAY



SETTING THE STAGE
  • After pulling out a four-point victory in its Big South opener, the Radford men's basketball team looks for a 2-0 conference start when it travels to Coastal Carolina for a Sunday afternoon matchup.
  • Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. inside The HTC Center as the Highlanders play their final conference game in Conway, S.C.
  • Series: Radford leads, 34-23
  • Last meeting: Coastal Carolina 65, Radford 59 (Feb. 16, 2015)
  • Coastal has won the last seven meetings in the series with Radford's last victory coming at Coastal in 2010. The Highlanders are 15-13 in Conway.
  • The Highlanders have started 2-0 in league play just once since the 2009-10 campaign.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 5-3, 1-0 Big South
  • Rashun Davis and YaYa Anderson are each on the cusp of reaching the 1,000-career point mark. Boosted by his team-high 16.1 points per game this season, Davis now has 998, while Anderson stands at 994. They would become the 28th and 29th Highlanders achieve the milestone.
  • Davis also continues to lead the Big South in assists, now at 5.9 per game. With 14 more, he will tie R.J. Price for fifth in program history.
  • Ed Polite, Jr. recorded his sixth straight double-figure scoring games Thursday against Liberty, keeping his average for the season at 10.3.
  • The freshman tops RU in rebounding at 5.9 per contest and grabbed four more offensive boards against the Flames to retake the Big South lead with 27.
  • As a team, Radford racked up a season-high 18 offensive rebounds in Thursday night's win, upping its conference-best average to 13.6.
  • The Highlanders have had their lowest turnover totals of the season in the last two games, committing just eight and nine, respectively.
  • Led by Polite, Jr. and Darius Bolstad, RU's bench has contributed at least 21 points each in the last seven games and is averaging 28.8 overall.
  • Radford is 2-1 in true road games this season (Georgetown, VCU and Penn State), averaging 80.7 points per game, compared to just 64.0 at home.
  • The Highlanders are 4-11 in its road conference openers, with just one win in its last five.
 
SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA
  • Record: 3-4, 0-1 Big South
  • Coastal Carolina has dropped its last two games, losing its conference opener at Campbell on Nov. 28 before falling to Auburn 81-78 at home on Wednesday.
  • The Chanticleers also started the season with back-to-back losses before winning three in a row, capped by a six-point victory over College of Charleston.
  • Coastal returns four starters from last year's squad that won a second straight Big South Tournament title, but lost its top two scorers.
  • Junior Elijah Wilson has led the way this season with 15.4 points per game and is coming off a 25-point outing against Auburn that included six 3-pointers. He is shooting 41 percent from beyond the arc.
  • Senior forward Badou Diagne is third on the team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding (6.7 per game).
  • Point guard Shivaughn Wiggins has averaged 13.6 points while missing two games.
  • Jaylen Shaw, a transfer from South Carolina, has filled in for Wiggins and is contributing 10.3 points and a team-best 4.3 assists.
  • Coastal entered play Saturday leading the Big South in rebounding at 41.7 per game and rebounding margin (+6.4). The Chanticleers are shooting 47 percent as a team.

  • Radford returns home to host a New River Valley showdown against Virginia Tech for the first time on Wednesday night.
