ERRORS PROVE TOO COSTLY FOR HIGHLANDERS AT FURMAN, DROP DOUBLEHEADER

GREENVILLE, S.C. ---- After an error-filled first game led to a 7-2 loss, Radford softball appeared to be on its way to the season's first win before Furman posted a seven-run seventh inning to down the Highlanders, 8-6, in game two on Friday at the Pepsi Softball Stadium in Greenville, S.C.

Whitney Davis led Radford (0-5, 0-0 Big South) with four hits on the day, two in each contest, and three RBI. Summer Robinson and Maggie Rowe both tallied two RBI off their lone hits of the afternoon in game two against the Paladins. Casey Burns finished the day with a combined three hits and two runs. Tiffany Brown, who came in as relief in game one, got her first collegiate start in game two. Brown pitched 6.2 innings, giving up seven hits and three earned runs.

Despite posting 18 hits on the day, the Highlanders could only engineer eight runs in the two contests. A combined eight errors proved to be too much to overcome.

The Paladins (2-0, 0-0 SoCon) weren't on the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth inning when Lindsey Bert doubled to left field to bring Taylor Jenkins home with two outs.

Furman sealed the game in with a seven-run rally in the bottom of the final inning. The Paladins added two more tallies wit one out when Natalie Clemons tripled to right to score one and then was brought home by a sac fly off the bat of Sieara Bishop. With the bases loaded, Bert hit a single to the gap behind the shortstop to bring Furman within one run, 6-5.  Taylor Collins ended the game on a walk off homerun over left field wall.

The afternoon's second game started with a deep triple to right field from Kayla Bishton. She would come in to score on a bunt by Burns. Rowe, starting game two in place of Megan Honaker at catcher, brought Burns in with a single.

Burns found second base for the second time in the matchup, hitting a double to the right-centerfield gap. Davis advanced Burns to third with her third hit of the day. Burns would score on a RBI single from Alex Lang, and who was then brought home herself off a double by Rowe.

In the top of the fifth, Burns reached on a walk and moved to second on a single off the bat of Davis.  Rowe took a pitch to the shoulder to load the bases for Radford. Robinson then found a gap in left-center for a two-run double to give the Highlanders their largest lead of the season, 6-0.

In game one, Davis and Burns led Radford at the plate with two hits apiece. Davis batted in Radford's only two runs of the contest, hitting a single to right field. In the circle, Abby Morrow started the game and went 4.1 innings before Brown came in as relief. Morrow surrendered two earned runs off seven hits. Brown gave up two earned in 1.2 innings.

The Paladins' runs came by committee, with seven different batters being credited with a RBI. Hope Smith led the Furman with two hits. Alex Sappington went seven innings with six strikeouts and allowing seven hits.

With one out in the top of the first, Burns hit a poke in the left-center field gap to reach second. Bishton walked to put two on base for Davis. After a wild pitch, the runners moved into scoring position. Davis connected on the third pitch she saw and sent it to right field to score the Highlanders' only two of the contest.

The Paladins responded in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs. Smith doubled down the left field line after Brittany Houston reached on a fielding error at third base. A grounder by Courtney Jacobs scored one runner, while a single from Ambree Muller scored the second.

Radford kept the game knotted at two when it turned a 6-3-5 double play to end the third inning after Smith hit a double down the left field line.

The tie was broken in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs. Hannah Reynolds opened the inning reaching first on an error at shortstop. Bishop singled down the line to move Reynolds to second before a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position with no  one out. Smith hit a sac fly to centerfield to score one. The lead was extended to two with a triple off the bat of Clemmons. Furman scored the third run of the inning on a single up the middle by Jenkins.

The Paladins piled on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Andrea Abbatiello hit Furman's second triple of the contest to right field to score one. A sac fly at the next at bat brought in the second runner.

The Highlanders return to action on Saturday against Western Carolina at 1 p.m. and George Mason at 5 p.m. to wrap up play at the Upstate Classic.
