RADFORD, Va. ---- The Radford softball team travels to Elon, N.C., to open its 2015 season at the Elon Tournament. The Highlanders kick off play against USC Upstate on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m.

"We are excited to get out and play against two strong teams this weekend," said head coach Maggie White. "Our preparation has been long and intense, and the team is anxious to see where we are starting out."

After facing off against the Spartans, who have received votes in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Poll and the USA Softball Top-25 Poll, Radford takes the field versus the weekend's host, Elon, at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

On Sunday, Feb. 8, the Red and White wrap up its opening series against the Phoenix at noon.

Radford is 0-2 all-time against USC Upstate entering Saturday's game, dropping both contests in a doubleheader in 1999.  Against Elon, the Highlanders are 19-7 all-time. The Phoenix are currently on a three-game winning streak versus Radford, dating back to 2011. All three of Elon's victories over the Highlanders have come in Durham, N.C. The Red and White's most recent victory was on May 22, 2010, in Radford. The Highlanders run-ruled the Phoenix, 8-0, in five innings.

Last season, Radford went 22-30, posting a 14-10 mark in Big South play to record its 10th straight winning record in league play. Abby Morrow shined in the circle, being selected to the Big South's All-Freshman team. Whitney Davis returns with the best batting average on the team from a year ago and was named to the league's second team. Becky Mantel joined Davis on the second team after tallying a career best of 37 runs and six stolen bases last season.

USC Upstate appeared in the 2014 NCAA Tournament and is one of three opponents the Highlanders will face in 2015 that appeared in the NCAA postseason. The Spartans ended the year 46-9 and 22-2 in the Atlantic Sun.

Elon ended the 2014 campaign 24-29-1, with 18 of its 24 wins coming against non-conference foes. Alaina Hall returns as the Phoenix's top bat from a year ago, hitting .341 with 15 extra base hits.
